This is the dome of the Westfield shopping center in San Francisco. The structure of the building makes it an ideal candidate for black and white.

It was getting dark in San Francisco. I had to increase my ISO setting to photograph on Market Street. This gentleman was standing in front of a large shopping center and the contrast between rich malls and poor people intrigued me.

I was standing in front of my hotel in San Francisco when i saw this group of people crossing the street. Luckily, I had my camera ready and snapped this image. The black and white image is a lot more dramatical than the color version. Especially the shadows are great!

This week I challenge you to continue what we have started last week. Continue to see you image in black and white in your camera by setting your camera to raw and jpg and setting your jpg to black and white or monochrome. You might want to start looking for subjects that you have not photographed before.

 

I photographed this dry fountain located behind the courthouse in Merced. There were rocks and leaves inside. I thought I photograph straight or almost straight down and include parts of the concrete rim.

I photographed these pigeons with a prime 200 mm lens. First I was wondering if they would make an interesting monochrome image but the structure and detail in their in the feather convinced me.

This is Merced’s Civic Center photographed from “M” Street. Structures are usually interesting candidates for black and white images.

These are some “leftover” flowers in my backyard. I used an “old” trick to get the background the way it looks like. I shot this image after sunset and picked a long exposure time (three seconds). The camera was mounted on a tripod and I was holding a white cardboard behind the subject. Then I exposed the image. After about a second I removed the white cardboard to give the background kind of a dreamy look.

Welcome back and Happy New Year everybody!

I would like to start the new year with some digital black and white image. If you would like to participate and own a DSLR or system camera, please change the setting of your camera to RAW and JPG, meaning that the camera will record two images when you press the shutter. The RAW file will be in color and the JPG file in black and white. The advantage is that your screen in the back will change to black and white or better monochromatic. Now I ask you to photograph whatever you like. Notice how your view begins to change just by switching the screen to monochromatic! You will see more structure, tonalities and contrast and that is the point of this exercise! Enjoy!

 

I started this exercise in my backyard. There were still some leaves on my fence and I photographed them using a prime 50mm lens. Can you imagine this image in color? What would be different in a color version?
