Gull at Asilomar

I’ve always thought of seagulls as just that seagulls. Well my Birds of Western North American lists 23 different types of gull, most of which have a presence along the California Coast. Looking at the bill, and the lack of any markings on it, and the wing color I decided this is a Western Gull. This gull is primarily seen along the Pacific Coast from occasionally southeast Alaska to the tip of Baja California.

Ich habe Möwen immer nur als diese Möwen betrachtet. Nun, meine Birds of Western North American listet 23 verschiedene Möwentypen auf, von denen die meisten entlang der kalifornischen Küste präsent sind. Als ich mir die Rechnung und das Fehlen jeglicher Markierungen und die Flügelfarbe ansah, entschied ich, dass es sich um eine Westmöwe handelt. Diese Möwe ist hauptsächlich entlang der Pazifikküste von gelegentlich Südost-Alaska bis zur Spitze der Baja California zu sehen.

Gelber Engel

“Gelbe Engel” werden die Rettungshubschrauber bei uns genannt. Dieser hier, Christoph 30, ist in Wolfenbüttel stationiert und landete am Montag für einen Rettungseinsatz in der Nachbarschaft bei mir vor dem Haus. Die große Rasenfläche ist dafür natürlich der ideale Landeplatz. Zum Glück hatte ich meine Kamera griffbereit, denn so etwas sieht man doch nicht jeden Tag.
The rescue helicopters are called “yellow angels” in our country. This one, Christoph 30, is stationed in Wolfenbüttel and landed in front of my house on Monday for a rescue mission in the neighborhood. The large lawn is of course the ideal landing site for it. Luckily I had my camera handy, because you don’t see something like that every day.

Seltsames Getier

Während eines Spazierganges am vergangenen Wochenende habe ich diese seltsamen “Blechtiere” entdeckt. Das hat leider den ernsten Hintergrund, dass viele Bäume wegen gravierender Umweltschäden gefällt werden mussten.

During a walk last weekend I discovered these strange “tin animals”. Unfortunately, this has the serious background that many trees had to be cut down because of serious environmental damage.

White-tailed Kite

The white tailed kite is a raptor that is more common in the central valley and along the coast. It is very acrobatic and has the ability to hover in place when hunting . It is probably closer in size to a falcon then a red-tailed hawk, and slimmer but the distinct coloring and ability to hover makes it easy to identify. A very pretty bird and enjoyable to watch in flight. Stay healthy.
