Sego Lily

I found this Sego Lily, Utah’s state flower, while hiking in Zion National Park. It is very similar to the local Mariposa Lily. When I wasn’t looking up at the rock walls Zion is famous for I found quite a few interesting flowers and plants.

Ich habe diese Sego-Lilie, Utahs Staatsblume, beim Wandern im Zion-Nationalpark gefunden. Sie ist der einheimischen Mariposa-Lilie sehr ähnlich. Als ich nicht gerade zu den Felswänden hochsah, für die Zion berühmt ist, fand ich einige interessante Blumen und Pflanzen.

Go ahead, try and eat me.

The prickly pear cactus is edible but might take a while before you can get to that point (pun intended).

Der Kaktusfeigenkaktus ist essbar, aber es kann eine Weile dauern, bis Sie an diesen Punkt kommen (Wortspiel beabsichtigt).

Meadowlark

On a recent trip to Northern California I didn’t get much time for photography but this Meadowlark was very accommodating

Grandma’s Singer

This is the sewing machine and other sewing items my grandmother used for many, many years. It is actually still peddle powered though the leather belt is long gone.

Dies ist die Nähmaschine und andere Nähutensilien, die meine Großmutter viele, viele Jahre benutzt hat. Es ist eigentlich immer noch hausieren angetrieben, obwohl der Ledergürtel schon lange weg ist.

Reflection of a mountain

I was born and raised at the foot of this beautiful mountain, Mt. Shasta. I never appreciated it until I’d left home. While I’d seen many photos of it’s reflection in Lake Siskiyou I’d never taken one myself. On my last trip up there I decided to make it a priority, unfortunately the closer I got to the prefect spot for a reflection the more the lake was rippled by the wind. Still I’m semi-happy with the results.

Ich bin am Fuße dieses wunderschönen Berges, Mt. Shasta, geboren und aufgewachsen. Ich habe es nie zu schätzen gewusst, bis ich von zu Hause weg war. Obwohl ich viele Fotos von seiner Spiegelung im Siskiyou-See gesehen hatte, hatte ich selbst noch nie eines gemacht. Bei meiner letzten Reise dorthin habe ich beschlossen, es zu einer Priorität zu machen, aber je näher ich dem perfekten Ort für eine Reflexion kam, desto mehr wurde der See vom Wind gekräuselt. Trotzdem bin ich halb zufrieden mit den Ergebnissen.

Stairway to the bottom

This would, by many, not be considered a ‘stairway to heaven’ since it is attached to O’Shaughnessy Dam that blocked the Tuolumne River and created Hetch Hetchy reservoir and flooded the other ‘Yosemite Valley’ .

Dies würde von vielen nicht als “Treppe zum Himmel” angesehen werden, da es an den O’Shaughnessy-Staudamm angeschlossen ist, der den Tuolumne River blockierte und den Hetch Hetchy-Stausee schuf und das andere “Yosemite Valley” überflutete.

Hetch Hetchy

Friedhelm and I went to Hetch Hetchy the other day. Hetch Hetchy is called the other Yosemite Valley but was flooded in the 1930’s to provide water for the San Francisco Bay area. We will never again see the true beauty of this valley. This image shows two iconic features, the Wapama Falls on the left and Kolana granite face on the right.

Friedhelm und ich waren neulich bei Hetch Hetchy. Hetch Hetchy wird das andere Yosemite Valley genannt, wurde aber in den 1930er Jahren überschwemmt, um die San Francisco Bay Area mit Wasser zu versorgen. Die wahre Schönheit dieses Tals werden wir nie wieder sehen. Dieses Bild zeigt zwei ikonische Merkmale, die Wapama Falls auf der linken Seite und die Granitwand von Kolana auf der rechten Seite.

Going Somewhere

This is a little misleading. Looks like someone is going on vacation or taking a trip. Instead it’s a display at the Manzanar Relocation Camp where people of Japanese ancestry where interned during WWII. Most left only what they could carry, many lost their livelihoods, wealth and homes. I was moved by the exhibits and the fact that even in their dire state they made a life for themselves and their families.

Das ist ein wenig irreführend. Sieht aus, als würde jemand in den Urlaub fahren oder verreisen. Stattdessen ist es eine Ausstellung im Manzanar Relocation Camp, wo Menschen japanischer Abstammung während des Zweiten Weltkriegs interniert wurden. Die meisten ließen nur das zurück, was sie tragen konnten, viele verloren ihre Lebensgrundlage, ihren Reichtum und ihr Zuhause. Ich war bewegt von den Exponaten und der Tatsache, dass sie selbst in ihrem desolaten Zustand ein Leben für sich und ihre Familien geführt haben.

Sand Monster

I took this on my trip to Death Valley at the Mesquite Sand Dunes. It reminded me of a monster emerging from the sand.

Ich habe dies auf meiner Reise ins Death Valley in den Mesquite Sand Dunes mitgenommen. Es erinnerte mich an ein Monster, das aus dem Sand auftauchte.

Tail of Tails

The Castle Air Museum located in Atwater California has over 90 aircraft. From one of the first drones to a B-52 and SR71. Not to mention a presidential plane. There is so much to photograph, but these lined up tail sections caught my eye.

Das Castle Air Museum in Atwater, Kalifornien, hat über 90 Flugzeuge. Von einer der ersten Drohnen zu einer B-52 und SR71. Ganz zu schweigen von einem Präsidentenflugzeug. Es gibt so viel zu fotografieren, aber diese aufgereihten Heckteile sind mir ins Auge gefallen.
