Now and Then

Friedhelm took me to the Western Railway Museum in Solano County.

As we were riding the trolly through the rolling hills I spotted this juxtaposition between a small old windmill used to pump water and the huge new ones used to create electricity. We had a great time and I encourage you to drop by if you get the chance.

Middle Falls- The McCloud River

I grew up in Northern California about 50 miles from the Oregon Border.  One of our playgrounds was the McCloud River. One of the iconic features of the McCloud River is Middle Falls.  As you hike the trail from Lower Falls and the Fowler Campground you come upon this.

I consider myself very lucky to grow up when and where I did. I appreciate the area more now than I did when I saw it all the time.

Last week my job took me to Sacramento. I got done somewhat early and decided to head over to Old Sacramento and the California State Railroad Museum. I like trains but have to admit that the museum was a little disappointing for me as a photographer. Most of the displays were under glass and the interior of the museum was dimly lit. I took this one outside at the depot. In the past I’ve seen several locomotives and cars outside. There were only a few this time.

But I love trains so all-in-all a very good day.

Cooler times

With the temperatures around here at or over 100° for the last few weeks and no real end in sight, I thought I’d post something from a cooler time. You can’t get any better than winter in Yosemite.

Have fun, stay cool.  Dave

Tiny Flower

Another flower from our trip to Kings Canyon-Sequoia National Park.

While the last flower was fairly abundant (see last Saturdays post) I saw very few of this one. It was very tiny, this cluster was about the size of a quarter and very low to the ground. Once again I had trouble identifying it. Maybe the altitude plays a roll in it being so small. My wildflower books seem to favor longer stemmed flowers.

As they say on tv ‘thanks for watching’

More to Come

Friedhelm and I went to Kings Canyon-Sequoia National Park.  A couple of hikes, friendship and some photography.

Walking along I saw this flower. Most of the time I see flowers and the whole plant seems to be pretty much at the same stage. Not this one, we have buds, flowers and seeds all at once. Over time this little beauty is going to spread a lot of seeds.

Stream Violet

I took this near the Pacific Coast Trail in Siskiyou County on a small contributory creek to the McCloud River called Cabin Creek.  The trail goes from the Canadian border all the way to Mexico.

Stream Violets are actually fairly common, but still beautiful. Hope you enjoy.

Mono Lake

I served on a jury this week. At the courthouse there were a number of photographs from local artists. One was of Mono Lake and reminded me just how beautiful it is and that I need to get back there. Hopefully soon.

This was taken last year about this same time. Hope you enjoy.

Bodie

One of my favorite places is an old ghost town on the Eastern side of the
Sierras near Mono Lake.

It’s Bodie State Park and is an old deserted (except for Park Rangers) mining town with lots of the old character still intack. I took this a year or so ago, and hope to make it back there real soon. I like how the cloud point to the old building.

Sharing

I caught these three sharing a meal provided by a Dandelion near the upper portion of the Sacramento River just out side of Mt. Shasta, while taking a little hike with my brother.
