Even in the middle of the city you can find little green oases. On the way from an appointment to my car, I noticed this summer lilac, which is used as a food source by many different butterflies, such as the swallowtail (above) and the little fox (below).

Lightship Columbia

The Lightship Columbia was built in 1950 and was the last lightship used on the Pacific Coast. Lightships were stationed at dangerous locations where a lighthouse could not be constructed or would have to be located too far away to assist in safe navigation. The Columbia Bar where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean is known as The Graveyard of the Pacific and is one of the most deadly bar crossings in the world. The Columbia was retired in 1979 and replaced by a 40′ wide x 42′ tall navigation buoy.

The new king

The paleis op de dam is the seat of the Dutch king in Amsterdam. On the steps leading up to the entrance in the back sits a man, a crown on his head, feeding the pigeons. When asked, he refers to his facebook account. His name is Peter Hebing. He is the new Messias, the future king of the world. His flag is the Dutch flag upside down. He will get rid of poverty and injustice in the world once he has got sufficient followers to replace the current king.

1 in 13 children in the Netherlands grow up below the poverty limit. In such a rich country. Why?

Catching some rays

It was a very hot day when I visited the Japanese Gardens in Woodward Park, Fresno. Not sure why anything would purposely stay out in the sun but this turtle seemed very content to catch some rays.
