A Modern Fairytale – The Accidental Tourist in Merced

Once upon a time, just three days ago, an European tourist arrives in downtown Merced and gets a room in the newly renovated hotel “The Tioga”.

The day is still young and so our tourist decides to find a bar and have a beer. After all, rumors have it that news are made by bar associates.

Salon is not a Saloon

Having studied British English for nearly a decade, it is still confusing for our tourist to understand what a difference of one “o” in a word can make…. Yet, after getting quickly lectured by a lady barber, he gets it.

Soon, he sees a sign “TrainRobbersSaloon”… if they sell cold beer?

Upon entering a dark and funny colored Saloon, he asks the bartender for a beer. Environmentally friendly or so…, the bartender asks back, bottle or glass? Well, being from Europe’s number one Fancy City, he would never drink beer from a bottle. So, he orders the beer in a glass. After drinking several ice cold beers, our tourist starts to feel funny and decides to go back to the hotel.

Walking the streets of downtown Merced, his vision turns multi colors and multi everything… and he starts to wonder if that is just the result of the alcohol in the beers or some additive?

Finally, he sees his Hotel in the distance, although it may be difficult to find the entrance. With what is left of his temporary mental departure, he recalls a friend’s saying: “Drink beer only from the bottle in strange Saloons!”

As a conclusion to our topic “Cars” from last week, I would like to show this rare and perfectly restored VW Beetle. It is a “Pretzel Beetle”, so called because of its characteristic rear window. Here in the export version (with lots of chrome) as a right-hand drive car for the British market. Of the 402,921 Brezelkäfer built in total, there are probably not many left today.

Cherry Blossoms

This year saw the earliest cherry blossom season in Japan in more than 800 years. Meanwhile the Sakura trees are popular ornamental trees all over the world. They also line this shopping street in Delft. In the background the old church of Delft. It has a steeple which is not much less inclined than the one in Pisa, Italy, but is much bigger.

Waiting

This week’s blog assignment is old cars. While waiting for someone to do business with a local wrecking yard I decided to do some exploring and came across this little gem. As someone who has helped in the restoration of project cars and trucks, I could see the potential in this little guy. It is a 1950 (or thereabouts) Chevy. I hope it has since found a home. I finished this with a high contrast/high key look to give it more interest. I hope you are all enjoying this spring weather. Stay healthy.

Plymouth

Now with few exceptions many cars seem almost alike. You have to look at the nameplate or logo to see what make the automobile is. There was a time when style was everything.

Mit wenigen Ausnahmen scheinen sich viele Autos fast zu ähneln. Sie müssen auf das Typenschild oder Logo schauen, um zu sehen, was das Auto ausmacht. Es gab eine Zeit, in der Stil alles war.
