Sinalco-Bulli

This colorful example of the Bulli is – of course – in the Autostadt. Sinalco was delivered with it. Sinalco was the first successful soft drink brand in Europe, made in Germany. And it still exists today. Only the delivery vehicles are a lot bigger.

Cars

During the time of the GDR, the german democratic republic before reunification in 1989, the Trabant was a coveted possession. People were on a waiting list for many years to get one. In January 1991, a year with an exceptional cold and icy winter along the coast of the Baltic Sea, buyers already preferred to buy a more fancy car. A few years later they had disappeared from german roads. At the station in Göhren on the island of Rügen this one, the station wagon version, still had the old GDR license plate. The Rügen narrow gauge railroad, however, in the background, which in 1991 still was a means of public transport which had barely changed since the foundation of the GDR, is still running today with the same steam engines and cars. It even was extended. However, today, its services are many used by tourists.

Living Memorial Sculpture Garden

Just a few miles north of Weed California on Highway 97 is the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden. It’s a tribute to all who have served. The sculptures are all made of metal by sculptor Dennis Smith. While this isn’t the forum to tell it’s meaning and history I urge you to go to https://www.lmsgarden.org/ to get a better understanding. I was very moved by the whole experience, much more than I had anticipated. The first image is of ‘The Nurses’ the second is of the hand of the person being carried. These sculptures were very expressive. I converted them to black and white to emphasize the sculpture and not the background.

Yesterday I used the beautiful weather for a round through the castle park. The park is also used as a display and installation area for art objects, deliberately playing with the contrast between old parkland in the style of English landscape parks and modern art. These planting beds are given a futuristic look by their stainless steel edgings. The whole thing looks like a collection of large crystals or glass fragments, depending on the incidence of light.
