Legend has it that the first carnival took place in Venice in 1162. However, there was a long break and the current festival started again in 1979. I went there several times in the 1980ies. Already then it started to get very busy. The visitors can be but in two main categories: narcissists who display elaborate masks and photographers. This year the carnival will start next Saturday, February 12th, and end on shrove Tuesday, March 1st.
