Late Winter Storm at Zion National Park

“Bad weather makes great images!” I had a chance to proof it during my last visit to Zion NP. I was hoping for nice Spring weather instead I woke up to snowflakes and rapidly moving clouds. Once in a while there was a lighter moment and the sun almost peaked through.

Vor ein paar Wochen habe ich eine Gruppe von Hundehaltern beobachtet, die mit ihren Tieren unterwegs waren. Bei einem Stopp waren alle ganz auf die Hundetrainerin konzentriert. Alle – nur dieser Vierbeiner nicht. Für ihn waren die Leute mit den Kameras viel interessanter.

A few weeks ago, I was watching a group of dog owners out and about with their pets. At one stop, they were all focused on the dog trainer. All of them – except this four-legged friend. For him, the people with the cameras were much more interesting.

Osterhase

Während der Osterzeit steht am Eingang des Wolfsburger Outlet-Centers jedes Jahr dieser aufblasbare Osterhase, der für Süßigkeiten wirbt. Es sieht fast so aus, als würde er vorsichtig um die Ecke schauen.

Every year during the Easter period, this inflatable Easter bunny stands at the entrance to the Wolfsburg outlet center, advertising sweets. It almost looks as if he is peering cautiously around the corner.

Shadows

I decided to take a little different angle on shadows and went back about 60 years to my childhood. Shadow puppets, easy peasy, right. Nope. First the bulb on the projector I hadn’t used for about 40 years burned out after the first few shots, then it took me forever (it seemed) to get the flash and sync to work. In the end it was actually kinda fun. Now do I try and find a bulb for a 40 year old projector, I do have a lot of old slides.

Ich beschloss, die Schatten aus einem etwas anderen Blickwinkel zu betrachten und ging etwa 60 Jahre zurück in meine Kindheit. Schattenpuppen, easy peasy, richtig. Nein. Zuerst brannte die Glühbirne des Projektors, den ich etwa 40 Jahre lang nicht benutzt hatte, nach den ersten paar Aufnahmen durch, dann dauerte es scheinbar ewig, bis der Blitz und die Synchronisierung funktionierten. Im Endeffekt hat es wirklich Spaß gemacht. Jetzt versuche ich, eine Glühbirne für einen 40 Jahre alten Projektor zu finden, ich habe viele alte Dias.

Klare Linie

Ich finde, Bilder in Schwarz/Weiß unterstreichen in solchen Architekturaufnahmen noch mal besonders die kühle, funktionale Technik der Bauten. Als Kontrast dazu: der Baum im Hintergrund und der Stein im Vordergrund, der keck aus der Kiesfläche herausragt. Zu perfekt soll es nun auch nicht sein.

I find that pictures in black and white emphasize the cool, functional technology of the buildings in such architectural shots. As a contrast: the tree in the background and the stone in the foreground, which juts out boldly from the gravel surface. It shouldn’t be too perfect either.

Earth Eater

This gigantic bagger reminds me of a Mississippi shuffle boat, making its way through the waves. Here the shuffle wheel is at the bow of the Earth Eater, which is digging for “brown coal”. At the horizon the new time of energy generation is already appearing in the shape of wind turbines. Germany has decided to step out of coal mining within our country by 2030.

Kunstwelt

Stahl, Beton, gerade Linien, klare Strukturen, alles sehr ordentlich und aufgeräumt. Und zwischendrin, ganz klein, der Mensch in seiner künstlichen Welt. Ganz so schlimm ist es zum Glück nicht. Aber es ist doch immer wieder interessant, wie man mit Perspektive und Farblook Stimmungen und Geschichten in seine Bilder bekommt.

Steel, concrete, straight lines, clear structures, everything very neat and tidy. And in between, very small, people in their artificial world. Fortunately, it’s not quite that bad. But it’s always interesting to see how you can use perspective and color to create moods and stories in your pictures.
