Reflections

When I arrived in the Netherlands more than 30 years ago the concept of insulating double or even triple layer glass was basically unknown. A lot of the old mansions along the grachtengordel in Amsterdam still have windows with glass which is centuries old. These glass panes were not flat and had variations in thickness. Consequently the reflextions have bizarre distortions. In the last years heat insulation has become increasingly important and regardless the immense costs the old window panes are rapidly disappearing.

Romantic ruins

The ruins of the castle and cathedral on the top of Oybin mountain is a symbol for German history. At the border between Poland, Bohemia/Czech Republic and Saxonia it saw many different people pass by. In the 18th century it was discovered by the romantic painters like Caspar David Friedrich. It is especially attractive in Winter, when the old stones are not hidden behind the trees

Klare Linie

Ich finde, Bilder in Schwarz/Weiß unterstreichen in solchen Architekturaufnahmen noch mal besonders die kühle, funktionale Technik der Bauten. Als Kontrast dazu: der Baum im Hintergrund und der Stein im Vordergrund, der keck aus der Kiesfläche herausragt. Zu perfekt soll es nun auch nicht sein.

I find that pictures in black and white emphasize the cool, functional technology of the buildings in such architectural shots. As a contrast: the tree in the background and the stone in the foreground, which juts out boldly from the gravel surface. It shouldn’t be too perfect either.

Vergoldet

Bei normaler Beleuchtung würde man den Fahrstuhl und die Drehtür wahrscheinlich nur beiläufig wahrnehmen. Technik halt, funktional, aus Glas und kühlem Stahl. Und dann scheint die Abendsonne für wenige Minuten im richtigen Winkel darauf und man sieht plötzlich ein ganz anderes Bild.

In normal lighting, you would probably only notice the elevator and the revolving door in passing. Just technology, functional, made of glass and cool steel. And then the evening sun shines on it at the right angle for a few minutes and you suddenly see a completely different picture.

Altmark

Das ist Schloss Kunrau in der Altmark. Wobei es, genau genommen, gar kein Schloss ist, sondern ein repräsentativer Gutssitz, den sich um 1860 der Sohn eines wohlhabenden Braunschweiger Getreidehändlers errichten ließ. Der sich anschließende Park im Stil eines englischen Landschaftsgartens hat mich dazu inspiriert, dem Bild einen Look im Stil englischer Landschaftsmalerei zu geben.

This is Kunrau Castle in the Altmark region. Although, strictly speaking, it is not a castle at all, but a prestigious manor house built around 1860 by the son of a wealthy grain merchant from Braunschweig. The adjoining park in the style of an English landscape garden inspired me to give the picture a look in the style of English landscape painting.

Schräge Ansichten

Das Science Center Phaeno in Wolfsburg fasziniert mich immer wieder. Die Architektur des Gebäudes hat kaum gerade Linien. Alles wirkt wie organisch gewachsen. Dazu kommt noch das Spiel von Licht und Schatten zu den verschiedenen Tages- bzw. Jahreszeiten. Da macht das Fotografieren Spaß.

The Phaeno Science Center in Wolfsburg never ceases to fascinate me. The architecture of the building has hardly any straight lines. Everything seems to have grown organically. Then there’s the interplay of light and shadow at different times of the day and year. It makes photography fun.

Kunstwelt

Stahl, Beton, gerade Linien, klare Strukturen, alles sehr ordentlich und aufgeräumt. Und zwischendrin, ganz klein, der Mensch in seiner künstlichen Welt. Ganz so schlimm ist es zum Glück nicht. Aber es ist doch immer wieder interessant, wie man mit Perspektive und Farblook Stimmungen und Geschichten in seine Bilder bekommt.

Steel, concrete, straight lines, clear structures, everything very neat and tidy. And in between, very small, people in their artificial world. Fortunately, it’s not quite that bad. But it’s always interesting to see how you can use perspective and color to create moods and stories in your pictures.

Stadtansichten

Diese Szene habe ich neulich am Busbahnhof in der Abenddämmerung aufgenommen. Im großen Fenster des Phaeno spiegeln sich noch die von der untergehenden Sonne angestrahlten Wolken. Das Gebäude selbst, wird am Abend von Scheinwerfern in wechselnden Farben (hier: Lila/Violett) beleuchtet.

I took this photo a few days ago at the bus station at dusk. The clouds illuminated by the setting sun are still reflected in the large window of the Phaeno. The building itself is illuminated in the evening by spotlights in changing colors (here: purple/violet).
