I gave this image the title “trust!” This is a very young rescue cat that was abandoned and he is currently nursed back to health by one of my neighbors. We are in need of finding a good home for him. Since I started photographing animals and specifically cats I am sad how many of them went through a lot of suffering. I am shocked how cruel humans can be to animals and I am joyful having met people that care and give up sleep just to feed a little creature like this one every four hours a day.

Meet Daisy, one of our rescue cats. She is sitting on my wife’s shopping bag. I used a 50mm prime (fixed) lens and photographed her at f2.8, giving me a very shallow depth of field.

I fed this family of cats yesterday. I had only my point and shoot camera with me so the quality of the image is not the best, but I liked shooting the mother cat and her kittens from straight above. The sad thing is that their hunger was greater than their fear of humans. I wish I would find a good home for them. They are all adorable!

This weeks exercise is about photographing domestic animals. You can pick your own pet or go out and find a cat in the ally or a stray dog. Animals move around so you need to be ready. Try to use some creative ideas. Go on the ground, use different angles etc. And as always, have fun with this exercise.

I had the pleasure to photograph this cat indoors. The light situation was not the best despite the fact that I used two photo umbrellas with continuous light. I had to crank up the ISO setting and photographed with my 85mm portrait lens pretty wide open which gave me a shallow depth of field. The camera was on the ground and I photographed upwards. Enjoy!

I shot this image this evening. Being inside -looking outside can happen at any time of the day and the photographer has to understand the different kind of light source he/she has to deal with. The light on the inside is definitely different than the light outside. I believe it is of the utmost importance for every photographer to see these differences and to use different light in his/her composition.

This image has a great feeling of depth. The door knob on the right through the door, along the pathway, the street and the house across the street are all elements of this deep 3D impression. I used a single raw photograph that I developed for the outside first and saved as a tif file. Then I used the same raw file that I developed for the inside of the house. The second image I put as a layer on top of the tif file and created and painted a mask that made the outside of the tif file (outside) visible.

This weeks exercise is about being inside a building and looking outside. You have to deal with two completely different light situations. Usually the light on the outside is much for bright and you get some sort of silhouette of the subject on the inside. There are different methods to solve the problem. You can use a flash to brighten up the inside of you can take two shots, one exposed for the inside and one for the outside and combine them in post-production.

Another issue is focusing and f stop. Do you focus for inside or outside. Do you take two image and combine them in post- production. Do you know the hyper-focal distance of your lens? These are all issues that you have to deal with if you want to create a great image.

My breakfast this morning! I picked a read plate, have read jam and a red peach. I picked yellow orange juice and a table cloth with green and blue colors.
