Mountain Meadows In June and July and sometimes August, the meadows in the upper elevations of the Sierra-Nevada around Yosemite are filled with color. This meadow hosted Shooting Stars and Bistort along with many others that were not quite as visible. Enjoy your day
High Sierra Nature Hello again. I am glad to be back. This time of year I spend as much time as possible in the high country of the sierras. I love the wildflowers at those elevations. This picture was taken at approximately 7,000 ft. These plants have to be hardy to survive, as do the insects that pollinate them and keep them reproducing. It amazes me how they survive the harsh conditions at these elevations This is a Mountain Aster with a Checkerspot butterfly busily doing his job.
Checkered White This pretty little thing was visiting my flowers one day. The underside of the wings are a light tan and white. I love it when I get these little guys visiting my yard. Enjoy!!!
Fern Spring Fern Spring is a naturally flowing year round spring in Yosemite National Park. You will often see people stopping to fill up their water bottles in this little spring, although I am not sure I would try it. It is a very pretty spot year round.
Dogwoods on the Merced River I went to Yosemite National Park with some friends a few weeks ago and the Dogwoods were just starting to open. I love to photograph them at this point before they start to show imperfections and wear from insects and weather. The Merced River provides the green background. Have a wonderful day.
Hansen’s Delphinium Although long-stemmed, the flowers on the Hansen’s Delphinium are very small a somewhat obscure so this little plant is often overlooked which is a shame because it has a beautiful flower. Just another example of the wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada foothills.
Checkerspot and Mule’s Ears My search for wildflowers is an ongoing one that continues throughout spring and leads me on many adventures. I came across a field of mule ear sunflowers that was full of these checkerspot butterflies. It made for some very pretty photos.
Blue Eyed Grass Blue Eyed Grass. This small flower is very striking. One of my favorites simply for it very bright coloring. They are not that common or prolific in this area. They are very short-lived but are very impressive. Enjoy your day!
Hansen’s Delphinium The Hansen’s Delphinium is a rather obscure long stemmed plant with very small flowers that go rather unnoticed until you study the flowers that are really quite delicate and beautiful. They tend to grow in clusters of 3 to 4 stems in a very small area. This is just another example of the beautiful wildflowers that grow in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Enjoy your day.
Spring Day This was just a very pretty scene on a lovely spring day in our little sierra foothill community of Mariposa, Ca. A plush green field with lots of blooming five spots, a small running stream, and an old metal barn. Enjoy your day.
