Exposure

Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam each have a photo museum. I saw “the world according to Roger Ballen” in the one in The Hague. Roger Ballen is an American photographic artist based in South Africa. His photos are surreal artwork, but he also combines them with sculptures, paintings and videos. This photo has nothing in common with what he does….. but it was taken in the cafe of the museum

Aguacero

is the word for downpour in Spanish, when I remember right. These photos were taken during a downpour in the Cuban town of Cardenas. In 1992, a time of utmost scarcity on the island, horse carriages were a major means of transport. Petrol was hard to come by, so the famous old, petrol guzzling American cars were rare. For the real thing, I recommend Steve McCurry’s book “Monsoon”, there are some photos on his website: https://stevemccurry.com/galleries/monsoon-0

There is a famous picture of Steve McCurry in action for the Monsoon series. Together with some other interesting information it can be found here…

Cleopatra

The Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca) is native to Africa south of the Sahara and the Nile valley. It was a rarity when I first arrived in the Netherlands more than 30 years ago. I used to see a lonely specimen along the canal when I cycled to work and had pity because it seemed to have no friend. Meanwhile it is included in the list of Invasive Alien Species of Union concern. In the warm winters they have proliferated and there are thousands

Masquerade

Legend has it that the first carnival took place in Venice in 1162. However, there was a long break and the current festival started again in 1979. I went there several times in the 1980ies. Already then it started to get very busy. The visitors can be but in two main categories: narcissists who display elaborate masks and photographers. This year the carnival will start next Saturday, February 12th, and end on shrove Tuesday, March 1st.
