Crescent Bridge

Friedhelm and I went to Lake Yosemite just outside Merced yesterday. Lake Merced has a unique feature, a crescent shaped bridge that extends over the water. During the winter months they lower the lake level since it’s not used for irrigation this time of the year. That allows for some interesting reflections.

Friedhelm und ich sind gestern zum Lake Yosemite vor Merced gefahren. Lake Merced hat eine einzigartige Eigenschaft, eine sichelförmige Brücke, die sich über das Wasser erstreckt. Während der Wintermonate senken sie den See, da er zu dieser Jahreszeit nicht zur Bewässerung genutzt wird. Das erlaubt einige interessante Überlegungen.

Great Egrets MWR

I bought a new Sigma 100-400mm lens and decided to take a trip to one of my favorite spots, the Merced Wildlife Refuge. This time of year a lot of migrating water fowl make the Refuge home. At least for a little while. One thing you can count on are Egret. The Snowy Egret is a smaller version of the Great Egret. We see a lot of Great Egrets throughout the year. Snowy Egrets are a little more rare.  By the way I love my new lens.

Ich kaufte ein neues Sigma 100-400mm Objektiv und entschied mich für einen Ausflug zu einem meiner Lieblingsorte, dem Merced Wildlife Refuge. Zu dieser Jahreszeit machen viele wandernde Wasservögel die Zuflucht nach Hause. Zumindest für eine Weile. Eine Sache, auf die Sie sich verlassen können, ist Egret. Der Schmuckreiher ist eine kleinere Version des großen Reihers. Wir sehen während des ganzen Jahres viele Silberreiher. Schmuckreiher sind etwas seltener. Ich liebe übrigens mein neues Objektiv.

Veterans Day

Every year for Veterans Day Merced College is the host of over 1,000 flags. These flags were purchased by residents to honor a particular veteran or first responder.

Friedhelm and I went there in the evening to photograph. It is an awesome sight, my photo obviously shows only a small portion of the posted flags. There are also a number of placards that give a good history lesson and remind you that our way of life did not come without a cost, both on the field of battle and the home front.

Merced College ist jedes Jahr zum Veterans Day Gastgeber von über 1.000 Flaggen. Diese Flaggen wurden von Bewohnern gekauft, um einen bestimmten Veteran oder Ersthelfer zu ehren.

Friedhelm und ich gingen abends dorthin, um zu fotografieren. Es ist ein fantastischer Anblick, mein Foto zeigt offensichtlich nur einen kleinen Teil der ausgeschlagenen Flaggen. Es gibt auch eine Reihe von Plakaten, die eine gute Geschichtsstunde vermitteln und Sie daran erinnern, dass unsere Lebensweise sowohl auf dem Schlachtfeld als auch an der Heimatfront nicht ohne Kosten gekostet hat.

Shaky Stars

Please take this as a lesson of what not to do.

A while back Friedhelm, Dorothy and I went to Hornitos, a very small town in the California foothills, to do some night photography. Near the end of the evening I attempted a star trail. Grouping 46 30 second shots, with an interesting result. Note to self, get a intervelometer and use your sturdy tripod so you don’t shake the camera and end up with a interesting photo.

Vor einiger Zeit gingen Friedhelm, Dorothy und ich nach Hornitos, einer sehr kleinen Stadt im kalifornischen Vorgebirge, um Nachtaufnahmen zu machen. Gegen Ende des Abends versuchte ich einen Sternenpfad. Gruppieren von 46 30-Sekunden-Aufnahmen mit einem interessanten Ergebnis. Notieren Sie sich ein Intervallometer und verwenden Sie Ihr stabiles Stativ, damit Sie die Kamera nicht schütteln und ein interessantes Foto erhalten.

Sandhill Crane

Friedhelm and I went to the Merced Wildlife Refuge the other day. There were a lot of Sandhill Cranes though most of them came in after sunset. Still there were several groups earlier in the evening. Sandhill Cranes are noted for  their displays. This one is not coming in for a landing but jumping up trying to impress the crane on the left, who along with the others doesn’t seem to impressed.

Friedhelm und ich gingen neulich zum Merced Wildlife Refuge. Es gab viele Sandhill-Kraniche, obwohl die meisten nach Sonnenuntergang hereinkamen. Trotzdem gab es am Abend mehrere Gruppen. Sandhill-Kraniche sind für ihre Ausstellungen bekannt. Dieser kommt nicht für eine Landung, sondern springt auf und versucht den Kran links zu beeindrucken, der zusammen mit den anderen nicht zu beeindrucken scheint.

Stormy Sunset

As I mentioned last week I went to the eastern side of the Sierras for some autumn photography. The weather was variable for much of the time. The last day there was great for photography and  on the way home I was treated to a great sunset display as the storm clouds moved by.

Wie ich letzte Woche erwähnte, ging ich zur Herbstseite auf die Ostseite der Sierras. Das Wetter war für die meiste Zeit variabel. Der letzte Tag war großartig für die Fotografie und auf dem Weg nach Hause wurde ich von einem großartigen Sonnenuntergang begleitet, als die Gewitterwolken vorbeizogen.

Mt. Eddy

I went to the Mt. Shasta area the other day.  Mt. Eddy is part of the Cascade Mountains and is used as a generic term for all the  mountains and hills  that are opposite of Mt. Shasta itself. I was hoping to get a sunset color cast on Mt. Shasta but was treated to this sunset over the Eddys instead.

Ich ging zum Mt. Shasta Bereich neulich. Mt. Eddy ist Teil der Cascade Mountains und wird als Sammelbegriff für alle Berge und Hügel verwendet, die gegenüber von Mt. liegen. Shasta selbst. Ich hatte gehofft, einen Sonnenuntergang Farbe auf Mt zu bekommen. Shasta wurde aber stattdessen zu diesem Sonnenuntergang über die Eddys geführt.

Aspens on Granite

My friend Dorothy, she’ll post tomorrow,  and I went over to the eastside of the Sierra Nevadas to photograph the Aspens turning color. While there I took this shot of the shadow of some aspen leaves on a granite boulder.

Meine Freundin Dorothy, sie wird morgen posten, und ich ging auf die Ostseite der Sierra Nevadas, um die sich drehende Farbe der Espen zu fotografieren. Während ich dort war, nahm ich den Schatten einiger Espenblätter auf einem Granitblock.

Mono Lake

Mono Lake is in the Eastern Sierra’s and one of my favorite places. I was lucky that the wind was still and the clouds and con trails were everywhere. For reasons I won’t go into here I missed the sunrise but I bet it was great. Next time.

Mono Lake ist in den östlichen Sierra's und einer meiner Lieblingsorte. Ich hatte Glück, dass der Wind still war und die Wolken und Con Trails überall waren. Aus Gründen, auf die ich hier nicht eingehen werde, habe ich den Sonnenaufgang verpasst, aber ich wette, es war großartig. Nächstes Mal.
